Conceptual Art is a one-liner. It sacrifices visual stimulation for the sake of intellectual content so there is little residual resonance with the viewer after the initial thoughts/shock/questions. But neither can Art be merely visually decorative. It should excite both the brain and the senses.

I find that the problem with much contemporary art, especially conceptual art, is the lack of visual stimulus or pleasure sacrificed to the intellectual content. In my own work, while avoiding the picturesque and superficial, I always endeavour to use the formal elements of visual language to give the viewer a sensory as well as a mental enigma, question or revelation.

just throwing out the idea, but maybe it will work with actual artists trying to get something done. i have had this idea of starting a painting, and then before i get far(just enough to show that i did what i do), and then sending it to another artist somewhere else with a different style, to do what they wish to it, and then send it from there on to another(with the list of whos getting it and whos had it on here somewhere so we can see whats happening to it.)(ive only had two things/rules i like for this idea, and they are to not white the canvas over. and to not just destroy it)......let me know what you guys think.....this could become some insane thing, mayb a group of people each start their own and ship then to the others in a certain order and then in the end everyone has their own back.....unique and different works from the same artists)

So? What keeps you alive?

Here's an interesting catalog description of an exhibition that just closed, Frank Auerbach: London Building Sites 1952–62 (http://www.courtauld.ac.uk/gallery/exhibitions/2009/auerbach/index2.shtml)

He did plenty of interesting, strenuously-crafted work, but one line that caught my attention was:

As he worked and reworked the composition, his paint surface became ever thicker as he strove to express what he describes as “the core” of his subject. The result is a painting more than an inch thick in places in which the sheer weight and density of paint threatens to collapse in on itself, obscuring the image completely.

It seems the New Museum intends to mount an exhibition of Dakis Joannou’s collection of contemporary art. Curated by Jeff Koons. These two details have provoked a landslide of vitriol from outside observers who perceive the exhibition as evidence of transparently self-aggrandizing behavior by museum insiders.

Here's the first story in New York magazine: "Saltz: Money, Insularity, and a Huge Controversy for the New Museum -- Vulture" (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/11/saltz_money_insularity_and_a_h.html#ixzz0X9d8fucR)

Here's the follow up: "Art Moralists Give the New Museum a break" (http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/62054/#ixzz0X9dV2Dyw)

Wait, there's more: NY Times -- "Some Object as Museum Shows Its Trustee’s Art" (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/11/arts/design/11museum.html)

Science! A kinder, gentler approach to oil painting restoration:

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2009) — In the past, restoration of paintings and other old artwork often involved application of acrylic resins to consolidate and protect them. One of the most important tasks for modern restorers is thus to remove these layers, because it turns out that acrylic resins not only drastically change the optics of the treated artwork, but in many cases they accelerate their degradation.

Has Conceptual Art Jumped the Shark Tank?

Denis Dutton, a professor of the philosophy of art at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and the author of “The Art Instinct: Beauty, Pleasure and Human Evolution,” bravely tackles this question with a thoughtfully argued essay in the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/16/opinion/16dutton.html?sq=conceptual%20art&st=cse&scp=1&pagewanted=all

For what it's worth, I'd say he's right about the value of conceptual art declining with time, but I think it still offers its contemporaries something to think about and, one hopes, talk about.

Hasn't the definition of conceptual art drifted a bit, though?

Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 85 missions involving thousands of undercover agents.
